Arktos (Greek αρκτος) means ‘bear’. The Arctic is named from this Greek word in reference to the northern constellations of Ursa Major, The Great Bear and Ursa Minor, The Little Bear.
Who We Are
Arktos Bears of Northeast Ohio is a group of gay men in the Greater Cleveland/Akron area who have a mutual interest in bear-like men, who are themselves bear-like men, and/or who subscribe to what is generally considered to be the bear philosophy: an acceptance and pride in being gay, the understanding of the tenuousness of life and the desire to live it fully and richly, and the willingness to contribute positively to the bear brotherhood and the greater community-at-large. The purposes of the Club are to provide social connection and activities for our members and friends, and to serve the community through contribution, support, and education.
What We Do
Active in NE Ohio for over 25 years, Arktos is one of the country’s oldest Bear Clubs. We hold a variety of events each month throughout the Cleveland, Akron and surrounding areas. Our annual charity fundraisers include the February Mardi Gras and summer Luau parties, the Chili Cook-off in November, the holiday Teddy Bear and Toy Drive and our annual weekend run, BEARS IN THE WOODS. In addition, we host bar nights, Members-Only events, social outings, weekend road trips, and the Mr. NE Ohio Bear Contest.
